The US government is considering fulfilling Ukraine’s long-standing demand for this type of ammunition because Ukraine’s counterattack has been slower than expected.
The report states that the area of destruction of such shells is about five times larger than that of conventional ammunition. Alyssa Blakemore of Responsible Statecraft writes that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s request to supply cluster munitions to the Ukrainian army puts his American counterpart, Joe Biden, in a critical position. He noted that 23 members of the alliance that signed the Convention on Cluster Munitions are prohibited from transferring these bombs directly or indirectly.
