Members of the hacker group Storm-0558 managed to gain access to about 25 organizations, including government agencies, during a specially planned cyberattack for espionage and data theft.
Official sources said the problem was discovered in June. While the attack did not affect secret government systems, it did raise serious security concerns within Microsoft.
Note that the Redmond company has already announced that the unintended consequences of the attack have been successfully contained and that the elimination of the vulnerability for the affected users has been completed.
It is important to note that mailboxes belonging to employees of the Pentagon and intelligence agencies were not seized.
