Former Twitter employees sued the company for failing to pay promised severance payments totaling $500 million. After buying the social network, Elon Musk cut the company’s workforce more than five times, laying off 6,500 people.
Former Twitter employees have filed a class action lawsuit against the company for failing to pay them promised severance pay. The lawsuit reached the courts of San Francisco, writes Reuters.
The lawsuit accuses Twitter and its owner, Elon Musk, of violating employee benefit laws. Under Twitter’s pay plan, terminated employees must receive two months’ pay and one week’s pay for a full year of work, the lawsuit says.
However, Twitter paid the fired employees only a month’s salary and some employees received no benefits, the plaintiffs allege.
In the fall of 2022, Elon Musk bought the social network Twitter and announced a massive downsizing program. The number of employees of the company was reduced by more than five times, from 8 thousand to 1.5 thousand.
