Microsoft will change the default font in Office for the first time in 16 years. The Aptos font was designed by Steve Matteson. It was chosen by users among five options.
Until 2007, the main default font in Microsoft Office services was Times New Roman, after which it was replaced by Calibri. The company announced plans to change the font in 2021.
Microsoft ordered the development of five new fonts from designers: Bierstadt (initial name Aptos), Grandview, Seaford, Skeena and Tenorite and launched a user vote.
The winner, Aptos, was named after a city in California. His style is inspired by the Swiss typography of the mid-20th century and does not have serifs.
- Microsoft at the beginning of March 2022 suspended the sale of goods and the provision of services in Russia due to a special operation in Ukraine. At the same time, at the end of the month, the corporation announced that it would continue to do business in the country with clients not subject to sanctions, including schools and hospitals. The company refused to leave Russia completely.
- In September, Microsoft banned Russians from upgrading computers from Windows 10 to Windows 11. When trying to download the downloader for the latest version of Windows, an empty browser window opened on the company’s official website.
- The developer of MyOffice programs in April 2023 provided the Russian analogue of Microsoft Teams – the digital workspace for Squadus collaboration. The product is intended for corporate use only.
