Meta* has confirmed that it has started blocking access to Threads in the EU. Users complain that they cannot use the social network even with a VPN.

Residents of the European Union began to restrict access to Threads

According to TechCrunch, the app is not available in the EU due to privacy concerns.

“Europe continues to be an incredibly important market for Meta and we look forward to making Threads available here in the future,” the company said in a statement.

It is clarified that users in the EU are still available to read the tape, but cannot post their messages.

Threads collects a variety of personal information in accordance with Meta’s privacy policy, including information about health, finances, location, contacts, search history, etc.

This approach creates legal problems for a corporation in the EU, where there are strict data protection laws. In May, a local regulator fined Meta a record €1.2 billion for sending European user data to the US.

On July 10, the number of registrations on Threads exceeded 100 million: it took the new social network five days to reach such a number of users. At the beginning of the year, the ChatGPT neural network became the fastest growing app in history, gaining 100 million monthly active users in two months.
