The VIPER mission continues the search for ice that began more than 10 years ago with the discovery of water molecules in dark craters. Ice on the Moon could be an important resource for future space missions. It can be used to produce rocket fuel and air.
The rover will go to dark craters where sunlight has not penetrated for billions of years. The device is equipped with headlights to explore these places. The rover’s control will also differ from the rover’s because communication with the Moon is established in a matter of seconds.
The device will use solar panels to work 50 hours outside of the sun’s rays. There will be instruments on board to measure the depth of ice deposits. The mission is expected to begin in November 2024 and will last approximately five months.
