In the second quarter of 2023, Intel regained part of the market share that it had lost at the beginning of the year: due to the growth in demand for low-cost processors for Chromebooks, it added 3%, which, in turn, was lost by AMD due to lower AMD SoC shipments.
According to a market study by Mercury Research, the PC market as a whole has rebounded from a very weak first quarter of this year. As VentureBeat writes, referring to the document, the start of 2023 was the worst for the industry in a decade.
The second quarter, to the delight of market participants, did not bring new “records” (ie a new low), prices and growth rates are relatively stagnant, and development is even observed in some areas. For example, sales of mobile processors and mobile devices grew 20% compared to the previous quarter.
At the same time, the market average was largely unchanged from the prior quarter, as server processor shipments declined in the second quarter by roughly the same amount.
When analyzing the market situation, Mercury researchers also took into account processors for IoT (“Internet of Things”) and game consoles, and their popularity, despite positive forecasts, is simply not growing. Why AMD is losing its position, which has relied on Iot/SoC.
However, production of these processors is growing, and Intel’s shipments were just below average at the start of the year. Perhaps the third quarter will surprise analysts with a new push from Arm, as these processors can be used in Chromebooks as well.
