To avoid deception of scammers who use Telegram messenger for calls, experts recommend that Russians impose a ban on receiving calls from numbers that are not in the phone book. This is recommended by Kaspersky Lab chief expert Sergey Golovanov.

Scammers began to actively abuse the rental of virtual numbers for registration on Telegram. They also use messenger bots to fake numbers, including numbers owned by government agencies. An example of such a scam is the case when a scammer presents himself as the number of the FSB department of Russia in the region.

According to Golovanov’s advice, to protect yourself, you should set up the messenger to receive calls only from those in your phone book. This will limit scammers’ ability to dial. Also, in addition to spoofing, scammers can deceive, for example by adding a string of numbers to the “Username” field and hiding the real number. Even avatars with official logos of organizations are used to create an image of trust.
