Yasuhito Mitsuyama, PhD, from the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, Osaka Capital University Medical Institute, and Dr. A research team led by Daiju Ueda has pioneered a deep learning AI model that can determine age from chest radiographs.

The AI model was tested on 67,099 chest X-rays. It was taken from 36,051 healthy people in 2008-2021. The correlation coefficient between the age marked by AI and the actual chronological age of the people was 0.95. This means that the connection is very strong.

The experts also collected 34,197 additional chest X-rays from 34,197 patients with already diagnosed diseases. The results showed that the difference between the age reported by AI and the patient’s chronological age was positively associated with hypertension, hyperuricemia, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. That is, the older the age indicated by AI, the more likely people are to have these diseases.
