Last Tuesday (22) the Central Bank (BC) reported that a security incident involving Pix’s personal information has occurred for the fifth time. This time, Registration data of 238 keys exposed, such as username, CPF, affiliation, branch, account number and type.
According to the institution, Pix keys were under the supervision and responsibility of Phi Serviços de Pagamentos SA (Phi Pagamentos). This disclosure occurred due to occasional malfunctions in the payment company’s systems.
“BC states that Pix security and monitoring mechanisms have greatly reduced the scope of exposed registry data, limiting exposure to 238 Pix keys, or less than 0.00004% of the more than 630 million registered keys,” says a quote from the Central Bank.
The country’s monetary authority also stated: Sensitive data such as passwords, bank transaction details, balances and other confidential information were not leaked.
The exposed information (such as username, CPF, bank and branch) is cadastral and does not allow movement of funds or access to accounts.
The BC report also stated:Affected users will only be informed via the bank’s own app or internet banking.. Neither BC nor participating institutions will contact the person via phone call, SMS, e-mail or WhatsApp.
fifth leak
The leak, announced by BC last Tuesday, is the fifth leak involving Pix keys.. For the sake of transparency, the organization maintains a page detailing all cases.
The first exposure occurred on August 24, 2021, when 414,526 Pix keys were leaked (originally 395,000 leaked Pix keys).
At that time there was a security issue at Banco do Estado de Sergipe SA (Banese). Except for the first, this was the worst of all leaks, considering the number of data exposed.
After that, 160,147k Pix keys were leaked (between 3-5 December 2021); 2.112 Pix keys (24 and 25 January 2022); Latest status of 137,285 Keys Pix (July 1 – September 14, 2022) and 238 Keys Pix.
According to BC, all cases are investigated in detail and institutions are subject to the sanctions stipulated in the regulation.
