The Asahi Linux project has released the first compatible OpenGL ES 3.1 drivers for Macs with M1 and M2 processors.

Drivers comply with industry standards, ensuring they function correctly with a variety of applications. OpenGL ES 3.1 has been extensively tested, including ten thousand individual tests, to ensure that it conforms to standard standards. They are already recognized as compatible with Khronos, the company responsible for overseeing OpenGL interrupt standards.

Unlike the native Apple GPU drivers built into the M1 and M2, which do not conform to the standard graphics APIs (Vulkan, OpenGL, or OpenGL ES), the drivers released by the Asahi Linux team do.

This means that people running Linux on Apple chips can expect more consistent performance from “graphically intensive applications” like games.
