The court fined Telegram for the first time for refusing to locate data in Russia, Interfax reports. The amount of the fine is 50 thousand rubles.

Telegram received the first fine for refusing to locate data in the Russian Federation

According to the agency, the decision was made by the Moscow Tagansky District Court. The messenger was found guilty of non-compliance with the requirements to protect the rights of the interested parties. This is the first court case for a crime of this type for Telegram.

According to the case materials, the claims against the courier are related to the publication on one of the Telegram channels of the personal data of an employee of federal services. In particular, information about his former Ukrainian citizenship was published. Then the user contacted Roskomnadzor.

There were no Telegram representatives at the court session. According to the law “on personal data”, companies are obliged to store information about Russians exclusively in Russia. The localization requirement applies to foreign companies that do not have a representative office in the Russian Federation.
