Google Photos is innovating the way users relive and share their most memorable moments. Recently, big tech announced an innovation in which it will present a new visualization of its “Memories” tool: Now users will be able to create photo albums with their main memories with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The company’s new product goes beyond the existing functionality of “Memories”, which has been in Google Photos for four years and is used by nearly half a billion people worldwide, according to the company. Users can now save their favorite memories or create a kind of notebook-like timeline by creating new memories from scratch.
The bad news is that the function is still being distributed on a limited basis. This feature is currently only available in the US.
How does the tool work?
Thanks to the innovation, it is possible to switch between favorite images from months and years ago via a carousel at the top of the Google Photos app. Or the user can use the AI assistant to automatically select their most important memories and create custom albums based on them.
It is also possible to rename newly created albums by giving them personalized titles that reflect the essence of the memories presented, rather than more generic titles. Choosing the names of photo collections can also be done through artificial intelligence integrated into the new Google Photos feature.
The AI in question is an experimental Google Labs feature in Google Photos and is classified as generative AI. In the case of titles, for example, it is triggered when the user presses the “Help me nominate” button. If you don’t like the AI suggestions, you can edit or change them to include different details using the “Add Hint” button. Feedback provided by users will contribute to the continuous improvement of artificial intelligence.
In addition to creating personalized memory albums, Google Photos also allows users to invite friends and family to collaborate on viewing memories by adding their own photos and videos to the collection, similar to Shared Albums. The result is a notebook-like timeline filled with photos and videos.
While the initial launch will be in the United States, the functionality will be expanded to global markets in the coming months, promoting a richer and more immersive way to relive and share precious moments. For now, AI functionality is only available for certain US accounts.
