A prototype of the Russian SJ-100 short-haul aircraft has made its first flight, the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation said in a statement. “Superjet” was created within the framework of the import substitution program of systems and components; in all, around 40 systems and assemblies were replaced.
The ship was manufactured at the Yakovlev PJSC production center (part of the Rostec State Corporation UAC) in Komsomolsk-on-Amur. “During the tests, the stable operation of all national systems, controllability and stability of the aircraft in the air were confirmed,” the Ministry of Industry and Trade said in a statement.
The flight lasted 54 minutes, was carried out at an altitude of up to 3 thousand meters and at a speed of up to 343 km/h. The crew checked the stability and controllability of the aircraft in the air, the automatic cabin pressure control system, and also performed a “cloud landing” and a go-around.
In total, about 40 systems and units were replaced on the new Superjet: avionics, landing gear, auxiliary power unit, integrated control system, power supply systems, air conditioning, and fire protection.
To “speed up the test programme”, Franco-Russian SaM146 engines were introduced into the first prototype of the aircraft. The department promises to test the second prototype with domestic PD-8 engines.
- The EU banned the supply of planes and spare parts to Russia at the end of February 2022. In May, Bloomberg wrote that due to a shortage of spare parts, Aeroflot would be forced to dismantle its Boeing and Airbus planes to obtain spare parts. In March 2023, operators of Superjet 100 aircraft announced a shortage of spark plugs for SaM146 engines, but Rostec assured then that “there is no tragedy” as import substitution is “in full swing”.
- Earlier, media reported that the joint venture between the UAC and Italy’s Leonardo, set up to export the SSJ 100, hopes to receive a European certificate for the aircraft. This will be a key part of the agreement to sell UAC’s stake in SuperJet International.
- The buyer may be UAE MarkAB Capital, which plans to organize the production of aircraft in the UAE with the participation of Italians.
