The first Russian university has approved the use of AI-based chatbots in preparing term papers and theses, RBC has learned. The Academic Council of the Moscow City Pedagogical University (MGPU) came to the conclusion that the use of artificial intelligence technologies helps to develop students’ skills in data analysis and processing.
They explained that in any case the text generated by the chatbot has to be processed, and this is good material for new ideas and an opportunity to develop analytical skills.
According to the rector of the university, Igor Remorenko, the legalization of AI for the preparation of final theses will help to develop new skills, for example, mastering new tools and teaching to verify large amounts of information.
“We need general rules for the use of AI. Prohibiting its use is the easiest way, but ineffective,” Remorenko said.
Previously, RSUH student Alexander Zhadan used ChatGPT to write his thesis. The neural network prepared a paper on the topic of management in just 23 hours and the student successfully defended it. This case sparked a discussion about the ethical use of chatbots in job preparation.
Then, the National AI Ethics Commission asked the Ministry of Education and Science to regulate the use of artificial intelligence in the educational process.
