This malware has spread to more than 700,000 computers worldwide, mostly via spam emails containing malicious attachments or links. Once infected, computers created a botnet under the remote control of hackers, allowing additional viruses to spread.
The FBI, in collaboration with Europol and international partners, including a number of countries, directed the removal of Qakbot-infected computers via FBI-controlled servers, effectively separating them from the botnet, preventing further infection.
The operation was specifically aimed at the Qakbot malware, not other malicious programs found on victims’ computers.
