Apple released iOS 16.6.1 with a bug fix that allowed the installation of Pegasus spyware. The zero-day vulnerability was discovered by the Citizen Lab organization last week.
The zero-day flaw was used to install malware on the mobile phone of a member of a civic organization in Washington, United States. The software is used to collect sensitive data from the device, including photos, messages, video and audio.
Days after the discovery, Apple released the update containing the fix. It is important that all users install the package, even if they are not potential targets of the spyware.
Obviously, those responsible for discovering the breach did not disclose details about the bug. The organization identified the flaw as the BLASTPASS exploit chain. It turns out that this has to do with PassKit, the iOS framework responsible for powering Apple Pay and Wallet in iMessage.
The update is available to everyone
iOS 16.6.1 is gradually being rolled out to all users. Once available, the mobile phone must issue a notification requesting permission for download and installation.
