Uber Technologies is working on a service that will allow users of the app to hire people to perform various tasks outside of transportation and delivery services.

Uber is developing an application to hire hourly staff

A potential new service, tentatively called Chore, has been discovered within the Uber iPhone app in hidden lines of code, Bloomberg writes. According to the code, staff can be hired for various tasks for a minimum of one hour.

The app will ask users to indicate what work is needed, how long it will take, in which direction to perform the tasks, and what time the employee should arrive at the location. The cost will be determined automatically based on the duration and complexity of the work.

The new code was discovered by developer Steve Moser and passed to the editor. Obviously, the program is still in its early stages of development and does not contain specific cases that demonstrate how everything works. Presumably, the service will include typical tasks such as TV installation, appliance repair, cleaning, furniture assembly assistance, etc.

An Uber representative did not comment on the news to the agency. Consequently, there is no guarantee that the company will eventually release the product, nor are there any estimated release dates.

Entering a new market would be an important scale step for Uber. In 2023, the company’s sales growth slowed significantly, although it is still there (+14%). So Uber is definitely looking for new revenue streams and an additional vector for growth.

Last year, the company tested a service called Errands to deliver flowers or return an online order. It was previously revealed that Uber was working on an AI-powered chatbot to speed up and improve orders on Uber Eats.
