Lending tanks to Ukraine is one thing, Ax says, but restoring old tanks to working order and training crews to use them is another task, especially after the tanks have been sitting in a warehouse for 19 years.
Ex stated that most of the Leopard 1A5 tanks belonged to the German company Flensburger Fahrzeugbau Gesellschaft. They had been in storage for twenty years and needed repairs. Therefore, the consortium turned to Danish museums for help in organizing the training of Ukrainian military personnel on these tanks.
Denmark withdrew its last Leopard 1 tank from service in 2005, replacing it with the more modern Leopard 2. However, the Danes have taken responsibility for carrying out the first phase of training for Ukrainian tank crews, and the second phase will take place in Germany.
