The soft robot is made of ribbon-shaped liquid crystal elastomers. When placed on a surface warmer than the surrounding air, a portion of the tape contracts while the exposed portion remains unaffected, causing movement. This design allows the robot to move faster on hot surfaces.

What makes this robot unique is its asymmetrical design, with one end exerting more force on the ground than the other. This instability allows it to spin unimpeded.

The robot’s ability to navigate complex mazes and narrow spaces, as well as its ability to overcome changing environmental conditions, opens prospects for a variety of applications, including harvesting energy from the environment.
