Among streaming services, Disney+ is still one of the cheapest options, but that could change. Disney CEO Bob Chapek confirmed that the price hike is imminent. But it also announced that the streaming service is getting cheaper. What happened?
Disney+ has been available in the Netherlands for almost three years, and many movies and series have come to the streaming service in recent years. According to Chapek, the offer no longer matches a subscription price. Also, Disney should invest more to make all movies and series available on the streaming service.
After a price increase of 20 euros on an annual basis in October 2021, Disney is therefore considering raising prices again. That won’t be until October of this year: after that, the company will have “the flexibility to look at price increases,” said the CEO. How much more a Disney+ subscription will cost remains a mystery. Rumor has it that there will be an increase of 2 euros per month.

Also cheaper subscription
At the same time, Disney+ is also getting cheaper because it wants to launch a cheaper subscription form with ads in the United States before the end of this year. Disney hopes this will further increase its subscriber base by making it appealing to a wider audience.
It remains unclear how big the price difference between the regular subscription and the advertising subscription will be, but there are speculations that it is a few euros difference. The cheaper subscription can then come closer to $3 a month. The regular subscription fee in the Netherlands is 8.99 Euros per month.
It’s also unclear how many ads users can expect. Disney previously hinted that for every hour you watch, there will be four minutes of commercials. Initially, it will take 15 to 30 seconds per ad, but in the long run, the ads will take longer.
With a successful rollout, we will probably see cheaper subscription form in other countries as well.
Streaming is getting more and more expensive
Netflix also increased prices in October last year. The standard subscription has become more expensive from 1 Euro to 11.99 Euro per month, and the price of Premium has increased by 2 Euros to 15.99 Euros. Additionally, Netflix is currently testing a new feature that will require those who share accounts on Netflix to pay extra for something that is now free. These are the so-called sub-accounts that apply to people who are actively participating in a subscription without a family member.
Because of this, Netflix is significantly more expensive than Disney+, and that doesn’t change even after Disney’s price hike.
