The attack required the involvement of the Egyptian government, spyware from Cytrox, and hardware from the Egyptian company Sandvine. The campaign targeted Ahmed Eltantawi, a former member of the Egyptian parliament who was running for president. This was at least the third attack on Eltantawi’s iPhone. The attack was discovered by the Citizen Lab research group at the University of Toronto.

Google’s threat intelligence team also discovered that attackers had a separate exploit to install the same spyware on Android devices.

Both Apple and Google have addressed these shortcomings.
