Trehalose has protective properties that protect cells from damage caused by dehydration, cold, oxidation and other stress factors. However, absorbing trehalose requires a special enzyme, trehalase, which is not produced in sufficient quantities by everyone due to genetic differences.

The study showed that the cumulative risk of trehalase deficiency in northern Asian indigenous people of the Russian Federation reaches 60-70%. More than half may experience discomfort when consuming “mushroom candy,” while another 20% may experience severe abdominal pain. The lowest risk is in the Ob Ugrians, where the genotype associated with a significant decrease in trehalase activity occurs in only 1% of the population. The greatest risk is seen among Evenks, Evenks and Nanai.

The results of the research will help healthcare professionals working in the Far North to more accurately determine the causes of gastrointestinal pain and diagnose diseases associated with food intake.
