Some experts suspect China’s actions are part of a broader program aimed at gaining access to valuable human DNA data on a global scale.
BGI Group, the maker of Fire-Eye labs, is joining the China National Gene Bank, which stores genetic data on millions of people around the world, even though it says it does not have access to genetic information from those labs. US officials have expressed concern about the possible misuse of genetic information.
China’s interest in collecting DNA has sparked discussions about creating genetic weapons, although experts say it is unlikely. According to US intelligence, China’s main goal is economic, not military; China is trying to take a leading position in biotechnology and drug development by using genetic information, which is often called the “new gold”.
