Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Eddie Cue made a claim in the antitrust case between the US Department of Justice and Google.
Google pays Apple billions of dollars a year to set Google as the default search engine on Cupertino platforms. No one gave a public justification for the deal; most of the testimony was given behind closed doors.
Cue last led negotiations between Apple and Google in 2016. When asked why Apple chose Google as its default search engine, Cue said that “there was no real alternative to Google at the time” and there still isn’t one.
Cue also admitted that Apple is more committed to privacy than Google. However, he said the transaction included a requirement for Google to allow users to search without logging in. Apple has built several privacy protections into Safari to keep users safe.
Finally, you can’t select a search engine when you first set up your device. Google is installed by default. This is done so that the user can quickly start working with the device. In this case, he can then replace Google with another search in the OS system.
