The first details have emerged about the device that former Apple chief designer Jony Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman want to release.

According to the Financial Times, Altman wants to bring in Quince’s design firm LoveFrom to develop OpenAI’s first consumer device. Altman and Ive discussed product design at LoveFrom’s San Francisco offices.

The publication’s source says that Ive and Altman want to create a device that will provide a “more conceptual and understandable user experience” for interacting with artificial intelligence. When designing it, they were inspired first by the iPhone and how the touch screen on smartphones sparked a revolution in mobile internet connectivity.

Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son is ready to invest $1 billion in the device, but only with significant involvement of Arm in the project, in which Son owns 90% of the shares.

Together with OpenAI, Ive can create a computing device that is less screen-dependent. The project is still in the preliminary stages where ideas are being discussed. [Financial Times]
