Under a contract worth up to $131 million, the US Air Force will be able to purchase up to nine of these electric planes. The Air Force and the company will jointly operate the aircraft, but Joby will retain ownership and be paid based on hours flown.
NASA, headquartered at Edwards Air Force Base, will also conduct research on these aircraft. The airborne vehicle will be tested for a variety of applications such as cargo transportation, monitoring and medical evacuation, and more than 100 performance indicators will be evaluated.
Next year NASA will participate in testing the device in typical urban environments.
