ChatGPT developer OpenAI is exploring the possibility of creating its own AI chips, Reuters writes, citing sources familiar with OpenAI’s plans. Therefore, the company wants to reduce its dependence on the dominant GPU (graphics processing unit) supplier, Nvidia, in the global market.

OpenAI is thinking about creating its own AI chips

In September, TSMC, which makes graphics processors for Nvidia, said there would be a shortage of Nvidia AI accelerators for at least a year and a half.

Thus, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that acquiring as many AI chips as possible is the company’s priority. According to him, the main problems are the shortage of accelerators in general and the enormous costs of running the hardware for the company.

According to Reuters sources, the company is working on several scenarios, but has not yet made a final decision on the production of its own chips.

As analytics company SemiAnalysis previously discovered, a day of ChatGPT operation costs OpenAI $700 million, costs primarily related to hardware infrastructure support.

The company is developing generative artificial intelligence technology on a Microsoft supercomputer, which includes 10,000 Nvidia GPUs.
