Next week, Saudi Arabia will begin testing the Middle East’s first hydrogen-powered train. The country’s Minister of Energy, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud, spoke about this during his speech at the opening of the UN Climate Week for the countries of the Middle East and North Africa.
“We will have the first hydrogen train in the Middle East,” Reuters quotes the minister. The head of the department clarified that the authorities plan to introduce a “reliable, transparent and adaptable mechanism” to the domestic market.
According to the prince, the tests will be carried out in the coming months.
When hydrogen fuel is used, the hydrogen reacts chemically with oxygen to produce electrical energy that powers the locomotive’s electric motors.
The advantage of this type of fuel is that when used, water vapor is released into the atmosphere, which is harmless to the environment.
The world’s first hydrogen-powered train opened in 2018 in Germany. The vehicle was designed by the French company Alstom. The country’s minister did not specify who became the manufacturer of the first hydrogen train for Saudi Arabia.
