Scientists from the Ural Federal University and the Institute of Organic Synthesis of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences made an important discovery in the fight against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. They discovered that red algae called Laurencia contain substances that can prevent this virus from multiplying. These algae could form the basis for the development of new drugs for Covid-19.

Laurencia belongs to the Rhodomelaceae family and is widely used in food, folk medicine, and as a fertilizer. Recent studies have shown that it contains bioactive compounds with antiviral activity.

Scientists conducted a special study and discovered seven compounds in Laurencia that can inhibit the proliferation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. One of the most promising molecules is bromophychoic acid C, which can affect various parts of viral proteins responsible for its replication.

These discoveries represent an important step in the development of potential treatments for the coronavirus, although it is too early to talk about specific drugs. The scientists also checked whether it caused any harm to the human body and selected seven compounds for further research.
