Russian company Sitronics Group has successfully tested a new type of electric ship powered by hydrogen energy. This means that a special electrochemical generator (ECG) powered by fuel cells is used to propel it. This generator was developed with the help of AFK Sistema’s Hydrogen Technology Center and integrated into the ship’s energy system.

The ship was tested and successfully completed on the Neva River in the Leningrad region, not far from the Emperium shipyard. This means the technology works and the ship is capable of propulsion using hydrogen energy.

Sitronics Group President Nikolai Pozhidaev announced the company’s plans to create unmanned cruise ships that will go on sale in Russia next year. Prototypes of such ships are already being tested, and the system is planned to be deployed on commercial ships in early 2024. This means that in the future we may see more environmentally friendly, more advanced ships that run on hydrogen energy and can navigate without human intervention.
