The Bank of Russia, NSPK and the Center for Biometric Technologies (CBT, EBS operator) plan to launch test payments using biometrics in November 2023. The pilot will be shown at the Finopolis forum on innovative financial technologies, Kommersant reports.
The solution will be based on fast payment system (FPS) technology. SBPay will be used for online payment; Your smartphone camera will scan the buyer’s face. In this case, banks will not have to change anything, all modernization for the buyer will be done by NSPK, which will automatically update the SBPay application.
When paying offline, according to the publication’s interlocutor, the option of scanning the face with a camera is being considered, which will be placed specifically for this purpose at the store checkouts and will be integrated into the cash register interface. In order to make payments using biometric data, the user must allow it in their personal account at Gosuslugi. These terminals are already on the market and their cost does not exceed $100.
The main problem in the second case remains the security of the transaction: since the payment is made using single-factor authentication, without additional payment confirmation. To reduce the risk of fraud, it is planned to introduce a limit on bioprocurement payments, following the example of card payments without entering a PIN code: up to a certain amount, payment will be made in person and, beyond that, as Payment Regular SBP, via QR code or contactless via SBPay”
In the case of scanning a face with a smartphone, the SBPay application itself acts as a second authentication factor, since to enter you need to enter a password or log in with your face or fingerprint.
In the winter of 2022, the Ministry of Digital Development clarified the new requirements for working with the Unified Biometric System (SUB), which had previously been adopted by the State Duma. Banks will have to inform customers about the transfer of their biometric data. The citizen may demand that the processing of said information be stopped within a period of 30 days.
