The case is part of growing concerns in the United States about the impact of the app and potential national security risks.
Gov. Spencer Cox accused TikTok of misleading parents by portraying the app as safe for children and encouraging children to engage in addiction and unhealthy uses to increase advertising revenue. The lawsuit alleges that TikTok violated the Utah Consumer Sales Practices Act because it is addictive to children, misrepresents safety information and claims to operate independently of China.
This legal challenge is not unique: Other states, such as Indiana and Montana, have raised similar concerns and initiated lawsuits or bans. The lawsuit asks a judge to enjoin TikTok from violating the UCSPA, cover legal costs, and impose significant fines.
