Sri Lanka intends to abolish visa fees for tourists from five countries: China, Russia, India, Thailand and Indonesia. The corresponding bill is being considered by the country’s government.
As the British newspaper Daily Mirror reports, citing Sri Lanka’s Minister of Tourism, Harin Fernando, the authors of the project are Fernando and the country’s Minister of Public Security, Tiran Alles.
“Tourists from these five countries will be able to obtain visas without paying a fee. They will need to obtain visas when visiting Sri Lanka, but they will not have to pay any fees. They will have to obtain a visa for security reasons,” the publication quotes the minister.
Fernando explained that the objective of the decision is to reach the goal of 5 million tourists per year in the coming years, increasing the number of tourists from these countries.
“In addition, Sri Lanka is among the 20 countries that China has recommended its citizens visit,” added the head of the Ministry of Tourism.
The newspaper does not specify when the changes will take effect. According to the Daily Mirror, the document has already been presented to the Sri Lankan Cabinet of Ministers.
