Kotick was considering resigning from his position at the end of 2021 due to the company’s rapid growth after Activision Blizzard faced a lawsuit from the state of California alleging “bro culture,” pay disparity and sexual harassment. The Wall Street Journal report also alleged that Kotick failed to respond to hundreds of allegations of misconduct at the company. This led to an employee strike and calls for Kotick’s resignation.

Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision gave Kotik a “graceful exit”: It is estimated that Kotik will receive approximately $375 million upon completion of the deal.

The leadership change comes after more than 30 years with Kotick at the helm of Activision; During this time, he oversaw the merger with Blizzard and played a key role in the company’s growth and transformation.
