While the purpose of these satellites remains unclear, the move is seen as strategic and is likely aimed at acquiring additional radio spectrum to expand Starlink’s satellite internet services. The company has not yet made an official comment on the submitted application.
Starlink, which currently serves more than 2 million users, relies on its satellite constellation to provide worldwide Internet access. The ITU application mentions the use of radio frequencies in the range of 123,000 MHz to 174,500 MHz, which Starlink does not currently use. According to some assumptions, SpaceX plans to secure these frequencies to get ahead of its competitors.
