The base will not only perform important functions for Arctic research, but will also become an important stronghold in ensuring the security of the Northern Sea Route and Ministry of Emergency Situations operations in the region.

Development will begin in 2024 with the launch of the large-scale “North-2024” expedition, which will expand scientific research in this region. The base will also be used for education and tourism programs.

An important moment in the development of the Cape Baranova ice base is the opening of a new airfield in the archipelago that can accommodate large transport aircraft. This airport successfully supported resupply operations and rescue missions in the region.
