Reuters reports that the floating solar panel park in Alqueva, Portugal, will start generating electricity from July. Europe’s largest floating solar panel park consists of 12,000 individual solar panels and is the size of four football fields. The facility should generate approximately 7.5 gigawatt hours of electricity per year.

Portuguese organization Energias de Portugal built the park to reduce reliance on Russian gas. Of course, solar panels only work during the day, so lithium batteries are also installed to store 2 GWh. Solar panels float on a water tank, which is also used to generate electricity via hydrodam.

The electricity produced can supply electricity to approximately 1,500 households per year, which is one-third of the electricity needs of the surrounding towns of Moura and Portel. The project is part of Energias de Portugal’s mission to transition completely to green energy by 2030.
