This video was created using the power of the Discover supercomputer at Goddard Space Flight Center.
For the simulation, scientists needed a five-day supercomputer run processing 10 TB of data. The simulated black hole has properties similar to the object at the center of the Milky Way, which has a mass of 4.3 million times the mass of the Sun.
The video begins 640 million km away from the black hole and takes the viewer on a three-hour journey towards the event horizon.
A separate video shows what it might be like to approach a black hole from a safe distance. In real conditions, the journey will take six hours, and during this time, according to the theory of relativity, the passenger will become 36 minutes younger.
In addition to the video, NASA also released a 360-degree version that allows viewers to dive even deeper into the experience.
