There are two main battery identification systems today. One of them was developed by the IEC: Accordingly, batteries are classified according to shape, size and chemical composition.

An example of such a designation is LR14. The first letters L, S or C indicate an alkaline, silver-zinc or lithium battery, respectively. The absence of the first letter means that the battery is a salt battery. The letters “R” and “F” indicate the physical form of the object. If there is a number in front of the letter, this is the number of elements connected to the battery. The numbers after the cell shape are the diameter of the battery in millimeters. If the name has four or more digits, it indicates the exact size of the power supply.

There are also codes for cylindrical batteries that differ from the nominal dimensions of the batteries. Examples are below.

Let’s say LR14 is a cylindrical alkaline battery with a diameter of 26 mm and a height of 50 mm, and CR2032 is a round-shaped lithium battery with a diameter of 20 mm and a height of 3.2 mm.

ANSI introduced another notation system. This is “AA”, “AAA” etc. It is a letter definition like . In this case, only the physical size of the battery is specified (see examples below).
