It was named after researchers from the St. Petersburg State Electrotechnical University (LETI) and the State Optical Institute. Vavilov has developed a flexible “glass” made from an organic polymer that can be used to create stronger and more flexible displays in a variety of electronic devices, including tablets, monitors, ATMs and much more.
This technology has no analogues in Russia, and in most cases such materials are produced abroad. However, thanks to the development of domestic scientists, these flexible films can now be produced in Russia. Currently, researchers can create movies the size of a smartphone screen, but can increase production if necessary.
Displays contain multiple layers, including polarizers, which play an important role in image formation and brightness control. Most polarizers today are made of brittle inorganic materials. However, the polarizers that scientists have created from organic films based on graphene oxide are quite durable and miniaturized. This development can be used for different types of screens. Scientists are now looking for potential partners for the industrial application of this technology.
