Samsung introduced its first mixed reality headset, the Galaxy XR, which is a competitor to the Apple Vision Pro.

The Galaxy XR weighs 540 grams, which is much lighter than the Vision Pro, which weighs 750-800 grams, depending on the mount.

At first glance, the Galaxy XR looks similar to the Vision Pro, but if you look at it, you’ll immediately notice what they mean. The Samsung helmet is smaller and features a removable light shield that completely blocks out external light.

On the front side there are six cameras that track hand movements (a device that controls gestures) and broadcast an image of the environment to two micro-OLED screens with 4K resolution, 90 Hz refresh capability and a viewing angle of 109 degrees. Inside, near the display, there are four more cameras for eye identification.

Galaxy XR is powered by the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip, which was specifically designed for any device. Other characteristics include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, 16 GB of RAM, 256 GB of internal memory, two speakers and six microphones.

Like the Vision Pro, the Galaxy XR has a removable battery that provides two hours of use and 2.5 hours of video playback. But unlike the Vision Pro, the Samsung helmet can be used while the battery is charging.

The wireless system uses Android XR, which was developed jointly by Google, Samsung and Qualcomm. Android XR is similar to VisionOS in many ways.

In Android XR, you can work with multiple windows at the same time, view websites, photos and videos, and convert them into 3D.

The system integrates Gemini AI, which can be used to get help in any unfamiliar place. To do this, users just need to circle any physical object that they realize through the helmet.

But perhaps most importantly, the Galaxy XR has YouTube and Netflix apps, which the Vision Pro does not. For many, this argument can be decisive when choosing between devices. The video can be enlarged during viewing to create the feeling of an individual cinema.

Samsung Galaxy XR can already be purchased for $1,799 (~146 thousand rubles). All users receive annual subscriptions to Google AI Pro, YouTube Premium and Google Play Pass as a gift. [The Verge]
