The release of the long-awaited new product from Apple – the film “Killers of the Flower Moon” took place.
This is exclusive to the Apple TV+ streaming service. However, in October the film will be shown in cinemas, and then it will move to streaming.
Martin Scorsese is one of the main directors of modern cinema. Each of his new films remains in the ear for a long time. And his new work definitely does not stand aside.
We have already watched the film and are sharing our impressions. Is it worth spending 3.5 hours of chronometer time on this? Let’s figure it out.
You need to get involved in this movie
What is the movie about: Soon after World War II, Ernest Burkhart, who served in France as a cook, comes to seek his fortune in Oklahoma, where there is a large reservation of the Osage Indians. In those parts lives his uncle William Hale, who bears the nickname King – he is a landowner, cattle dealer, friend of the Indians and a big man.
The king convinces Ernesta to woo Molly Kyle, a young woman from a wealthy Indian family. The idea was that the land rights of this family would eventually pass to Burkhart (read to Hale), and for this all Molly’s mother, her sisters and herself had to die.
The story itself isn’t anything special, it’s “based on the presentation of the story” as stated in the opening credits.
It is served as simply as possible. So that every glance can be understood. Scorsese decided to recount the events taking place in detail for everyone.
This film tells the story of a brutal American story of love, murder, greed and betrayal in the United States of the 1920s – the times of the Indians. Scorsese brought scope and intimacy to the story of the Osage Indians, showing how difficult life was during that time adapting to the tribes’ civilizations.
The plot revolves around the corrupt and illegal schemes of landowner William Hale, but at the same time covers other borders. Based on David Grann’s non-fiction book Killers of the Flower Moon. Blood, Oil, Indians and the Birth of the FBI,” it reflects the events of that time and almost details the actions of the FBI based on a series of events taking place in Oklahoma.
This story is told from the point of view of one killer. With every passing hour you become more and more disgusted with them, but at some point you begin to empathize with them at least a little. “Killers of the Flower Moon” acts as a metaphor for one of America’s original sins: the mistreatment of its indigenous people over the centuries.
This film has a truly stellar first-tier cast: Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio are the highlight of the film. Their duet takes on such a long time frame to develop their relationship interesting to watchand their constant bickering (often on the part of De Niro) draws you to the screen.
DiCaprio generally played a role that was not quite typical for himself. Here he is more of a lost, spineless loser who is forced to work for his uncle and fulfill his every whim, fearing to disobey. His transformation and development in 3.5 hours occurs on a large scale, but is very alarming.
But the real find here was not even them, but Lily Gladstone, who played the role of Molly. She was able to move to a wider range of emotions: from joy to deep disappointment, from mild naivety to tired of life.
Magnetic vices and hidden demons are constantly discussed here in one form or another. In this case, everything consists of self-reflective western. The scenery of the old Wild West is abundant and complements the environment perfectly.
The film drags on despite the huge running time.
It often happens that you watch long films in several sittings. If they are dynamic, then you can get by with one.
This is not the first time Scorsese has made long-running films. What is his “Irishman” worth? But here the reflection and monotony of events at one moment gives way to a dynamically developing story with its own intrigues and behind-the-scenes games. And at this moment you realize that you won’t be able to tear yourself away from the screen at all.
This movie loves to take you out of your comfort zone., while demonstrating a calm environment, these are truly bloody events. You literally feel all the cruelty inflicted on the Osages. And this makes me feel uneasy.
Scorsese demonstrates the seriousness and absurdity of people’s actions and the things happening around them. This applies not only to the main characters, but also to secondary characters (no less recognizable, by the way – Brendan Fraser and John Lithgow also starred here, albeit in episodic roles).
Here you can feel emotions in every camera movement, in every look, in absolute silence (yes, there is such a scene too, there is no sound at all), gestures, as well as in the gloomy crowd. There was also a place for newsreels, which were succinctly integrated into the visualization.
In the film I use a lot of elements of modern and chamber cinema.
One of Scorsese’s best works
Killers of the Flower Moon is a typical Martin film. For some this turns out to be a plus, for others it is a minus.
If you are expecting something on the level of “The Wolf of Wall Street” from the new product, then you should not entertain yourself with empty hopes. I liked the new one better with “Silence” and “The Irishman”. This is a heavy drama that touches on a lot of topics. And it was filmed really well. This is definitely a movie that will last for years to come.
