Doctors from Sechenov University, affiliated with the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, are investigating the use of inhaled nitric oxide in the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia for the first time. This is an innovative use of this treatment that has been used for other diseases so far.
Inhaled nitric oxide is commonly used in patients with certain problems, such as pulmonary edema and hypertension, and for recovery from COVID-19. In this study, pulmonologists look at it as a tool to fight infections.
The study, which included 120 patients, was made possible thanks to the new Tianox device developed by Rosatom. This device is unique in that it produces nitrogen oxide from air rather than requiring gas cylinders. The use of inhaled nitric oxide to treat community-acquired pneumonia reduces patient hospitalization, which may reduce the burden on the healthcare system.
