According to the analysis of MegaFon data for the summer of 2022 and 2023, it turned out that Russians using digital eSIM instead of regular SIM cards are less inclined to make phone calls, but use mobile Internet more actively, especially when roaming. Especially young people are interested in this technology, but representatives of the “Sumerian” generation are now leading in internet traffic consumption. More than 98% of eSIM users use it as their main SIM card.
eSIM users increased their Internet traffic consumption by 17% compared to regular SIM cards, and this increase is most pronounced in roaming, where they use the Internet 1.7 times more and make 61% more calls. More importantly, the gap between video and music consumption narrowed from 20% to just 3%; This points to the growing popularity of eSIM.
The analysis also showed that eSIM users spend 26% more traffic on social networks, 20% more traffic on instant messengers, and 6% more traffic on web browsing. They are also more active in using cloud services 2.7 times more often. Experts attribute the growing popularity of eSIM to its reliability and convenience, as well as the ability to have additional numbers in a single device, especially for iPhone owners who do not have multiple SIM card slots.
According to MegaFon, young users aged 17-25 or “measures” are actively participating in this technology, taking second place among eSIM users, accounting for 25% of the target audience and becoming leaders in content consumption using eSIM.
