Cleveland Clinic director Dr. Michael Rosien warns that egg yolk has a high choline content. Moreover, it is several times more than a cup of cabbage. Does this pose a health hazard?

Choline is important for brain health and metabolism. It is known that excess choline can cause inflammation in the body. This substance may increase the risk of dangerous blood clots.

If you’re at risk for stroke, heart problems, or blood clots, Dr. Rosien recommends eating no more than one egg per week. The American Heart Association says you should eat no more than two egg whites and one yolk a day.

The New Zealand Heart Foundation reports that people at high risk of heart disease can eat up to six eggs per week. The Mayo Clinic says most adults can eat up to seven eggs a week and not experience heart problems.

One large egg contains approximately 140 mg of choline. According to the US National Institutes of Health, it is recommended that men consume approximately 550 mg of choline per day and women consume 425 mg.
