Scientists used special filtration units to collect groundwater samples from various wells. They then developed a technique to extract microplastics from water and analyzed these particles using microscopy and spectrometry.

The results of the study showed that groundwater in the areas of the Zvenigorod biological station and the Andreevskoye deposit in the Kaluga region contains high concentrations of secondary microplastics formed as a result of the decomposition of large plastic waste. For example, about 2,300 microplastic particles per cubic meter were found in the Andreevskoye deposit, and about 1,850 particles per cubic meter in Zvenigorod.

The research was carried out under the guidance of Associate Professor Elena Aleksandrovna Filimonova and Senior Researcher Alexandra Evgenievna Preobrazhenskaya.
