According to expert Dorsey Standish, any type of relaxing activity, including restorative yoga and deep breathing practices, helps the body shift into rest and digestion mode. This makes it possible to relax and, as a result, sleep better.
Standish recommends practicing the following yoga poses before going to bed in the evening. These include seated forward bends, hip stretches, child’s pose, hamstring stretches, and bending overs. They all stimulate the parasympathetic system, which is responsible for resting and digesting food.
If you use a smartphone, iPad or other digital device during yoga, be sure to turn off the blue light and do not pick up the device after completing the session. This will ensure that your body remains comfortable.
