The list of VPN services that Artem Sheikin, a member of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Construction, sent to Roskomnadzor with a separate inspection request included the company CryptoPro NGate, which does not provide services to bypass the block. Market experts believe that the company’s problem may not be an isolated problem and that all companies working with them may face inspections and possible bans on the work of IT companies.

App controls to combat VPNs can hurt businesses – Kommersant

Artem Sheikin sent the mentioned letter to RKN yesterday, and today Kommersant discovered that in addition to other services (VPN Master – Super VPN, VPN Turbo, VPN – Keons, Atomic VPN, Pride VPN, etc.), the list also included the solution from the Russian developers of data protection tools “CryptoPro” – “CryptoPro NGate”.

As the company explained in the post, VPN stands for virtual private network (“virtual private network”), and this is the general name for technologies that allow one or more network connections to be provided over another person’s network.

Many IT companies working with information security can use this technology to unite their own or client computers, phones, ATMs, etc., located in different locations, into a single essence.

CryptoPro Director of Business Development and Partner Relations Pavel Lutsik clarified that the CryptoPro NGate solution is the client part of an FSB-certified cryptographic information protection tool and not a blocking bypass solution.

Many government services use CryptoPro products: users use tools to file tax reports, manage electronic documents, sign documents at clients’ banks, etc. (since cryptographic encryption is needed to generate the digital signature key and verify it).

The CryptoPro company was also the first to certify a Russian-made HSM module, necessary to encrypt card payments. And the mobile version of “CryptoPro NGate”, available in app stores, is used to connect to NGate hardware servers, which the customer can purchase and deploy on their networks.

The chief specialist of the department of integrated information security systems of Gazinformservice, Dmitry Ovchinnikov, confirmed that on the domestic market there are many similar solutions, that is, authorized cryptographic gateways: Infotex, Security Code, S-Terra, etc. (these crypto providers are direct competitors of CryptoPro).

At the same time, Kryptonit CEO Vartan Khachaturov warns that blocking CryptoPro NGate can “disrupt business continuity” for companies that use it. Consequently, all these erroneous inclusions in the “blacklists” can cause problems in the operation of IT applications for companies.
