The Ministry of Digital Development announced the principles for blocking VPN services

“Based on the decision of the expert commission provided for in paragraph ten of the rules, filtering of specific VPN services and VPN protocols in the mobile communication network can be carried out for foreign traffic that is identified as a threat,” RIA quotes the response. of the Ministry of Digital Development to the appeal of the first deputy chairman of the Information Policy Committee of the State Duma, Anton Tkachev.

The document clarifies that access to some VPN services must be blocked in accordance with the law, as they are defined as a threat to Internet security.

Previously, the deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy sent an appeal to the government and expressed concern about the position in which the authorities promise to block VPN services that do not comply with Russian legislation, “and then we basically block everything . “

The deputy emphasized that the ban on the use of VPN “actually supports the pressure of sanctions against the Russians”, since a VPN may be necessary, for example, for the uninterrupted operation of household appliances, including those from China, and not only to avoid blocking.

In October it was reported that since 2021 Roskomnadzor has blocked 167 VPN services and more than 590 thousand information resources.
